The image of the Madonna can be found in the “Santa Casa” within the sanctuary constructed in 1294.
A story dating back to 1472 by Pietro di Giorgio Tolomei of Teramo tells of how the apostles wanted to turn the house of the Virgin at Nazareth into a sanctuary. Then, when Nazareth fell into Moslem hands the house was transferred by angels first to Dalmatia and then eventually to Loreto (1295).
In the 16th century, the Popes Julian II and Leo X granted special privileges to the sanctuary, pronouncing it a ‘holy place’.
