As often occurs with miraculous images, nothing is known of the artists who created them. By comparing styles, art historians tried to determine, at least approximately, the date of its creation. Some see in this image a work of art created around the year 1450. In the sense of tradition, it is the work of an important master from southern Germany. Other art historians see in the miraculous image a work of art from Sienna and they relate it to the trip which the abbot Gerold von Sax (1452-1480) made to visit Pius II in 1464. The miraculous image corresponds to a late gothic statue. The right hand holds a sceptre, the left holds the Christ child, completely nude; she is lifting her right hand to give her blessing, a bird poised on her left hand which corresponds to a common motif in the legendary writings of early Christianity. Around the year 1600, the image and the Christ child are covered with a Spanish style bell-shaped cloak. This garment on the statue of Mary changes in keeping with the liturgical colours used throughout the ecclesiastical year. Many valuable cloaks have been and still are, to this day, donated by the rich and poor alike.
