ST. MICHAEL (29.09.) Michael is the most important of the archangels and is the antagonist of Lucifer. A tradition tells us that there was an apparition of him in the Gargano in Puglie in the 5th century. He was venerated first in the eastern world then in Italy and only later in the other western countries. As he was elected patron saint of the Longobards, his cult thus extended to the reign of the Franks and, through pilgrims, to the British Isles. One believed he protected the Christians in their battles against the pagans and that he accompanied the souls of the dead up to heaven. In the upper floors of towers, chapels bore his name as he was said to keep evil spirits away. He is the patron saint of the catholic church, of the German people, of knights, soldiers, merchants, drivers, chemists, bakers, turners, tailors, glass-makers, painters, guilders, radio technicians and, since 1958, bankers; he is invoked by the dying for an easy death; he protects against bad weather and lightning.
