ST. FLORIAN (4.5.) He lived at the time of Dioclezian’s persecutions of the Christians, gave up his position as the highest official to the roman governor of Norico so as to be coherent with his faith and then left for Lauriaco to help his persecuted brethren. Here he was prosecuted and sentenced to death by drowning. This sentence was executed on 4th of May on the bridge over the Inn. His remains rest, together with those of other christian martyrs, in the High Altar of the Basilica of Lorch. He is the patron saint of Upper Austria, of fire- fighters, barrel makers, vasemakers, locksmiths, chimney-sweeps, soap makers and brewers. He protects against fire and water, in battle and against drought.
