Candelaria is located 17 km. from Santa Cruz de Tenerife by the South Motorway. It is the most venerated Image of the Canary Islands. It is difficult to determine the style of the Image. The sculpture is poly-chrome wood. We can say that it is a dark sculpture with a gothic style. This Image was possibly brought by missionaries from the Peninsula. The legend tells us that Our Lady of Candelaria was found by Guanche shepherds around 1392. The primitive Image disappeared during a night of torrential rain which damaged the Convent Church of the Dominican Fathers. The current Image was created by the great Orotavense Sculptor, Fernando Estévez del Sacramento according to the exact description by Father Espinosa.
