In the heart of Milan, the golden “Madonnina” statue has stood out on the highest spire of the Duomo (on the “Mariae Nascenti dictaum), ever since 1774, the year it was set in place, as a symbol of religious and maternal protection of the city and its inhabitants. “All enfolded in a golden radiance” (Carducci) – in fact it is clad with 6000 gold leaves - it is visible from any corner of the city and hence the famous song that was dedicated to her: “Oh bella Madonnina, how you shine from so far .... dominating the city of Milan”....,
