Rocco (15.8.) We have no sure information about him. According to legend Rocco was born in 1295 in Montpellier and, after having given all his wordly possessions to the poor, he left for Rome on pilgrimage curing the plague victims. On his return trip in 1320 he himself was infected with this terrible illness but was miraculously cured so, when he arrived in Montpellier, nobody recognized him and he was thrown into prison as a spy where he died in 1327. Those which where believed to be his reliquiae were translated from Montpellier to Venice in 1485. He is venerated as protector against epidemics and the plague. The chapel which bears his name, built near Bingen on a hill which is also named after him, is a place of pilgrimage and even inspired Goethe. Rocco is the patron saint of prisoners, the ill, doctors, surgeons, pharmacists, grave diggers, antique dealers, peasants, gardeners, carpenters; he is the protector of hostels and hospitals; he protects against the plague, epidemics, cholera, hydrophobia and accidents.
