The Nuremberg Madonna. Limewood, polychromed and gilded. The sculpture enjoyed an almost cult-like veneration from the 19th c. onwards. Even today it is considered a major work of Nuremberg art of the Dürer period. The figure belonged to a Crucifixion group originally located on the rood screen of the Nuremberg Dominican Church. The crucifix, now on display in the chapel of Nuremberg Castle, was probably part of this group. The slim figure of Mary has the radiance of a young girl and displays a certain kinship with the painting of Hans Süß von Kulmbach, a Dürer pupil.
