ST. PETER (29.6.) Peter lived in Cafarnao, was called Simon son of Jonah and Bethsheba and was a fisherman. Together with his brother Andrew he was called by Jesus, who gave him the name Peter (latin-Petrus english-rock). Peter was witness to Jesus’ miracles and the Passion in the Garden of Jethsemani. He disowned Jesus at his imprisonment and crucifixion but later became the main supporter of the Faith. He was the leader of the Christian community of Jerusalem and was substituted by James during his travels of evangelisation in Antiochia, in Asia Minor and later in Rome. He was present at the Council of Apostles held in Jerusalem in the years 48/50. He was crucified in Rome during Nero’s reign (64 - 67). Tradition has it that his tomb lies directly under the Church of St. Peter in Rome and, after recent excavations, it has been proved that since ancient times this place has been a place of worship in his name. He is the patron saint of Osnabrück; patron of Popes, fishermen, fishmongers, seafarers and the ship-wrecked, net makers, weavers, stone-masons, brick-layers, vase makers, blacksmiths, watchmakers, carpenters, glass makers, butchers and virgins;
