Luke (18.10.) Luke was a pagan doctor and was born in Antiochia in Syria. He accompanied St. Paul on his journeys of evangelization and, after the death of St. Paul he was active particularly in Acaia where, it seems, he wrote the Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles, even though according to the new exegesis the figures of Luke companion of Paul and Luke author of the Gospel seem to bear no relationship to each other. Traditon tells us that Luke died at the age of 84 in Leozia. The Emperor Constantin II ordered his remains to be translated to Constantinople in 347 where they were placed in the church of the Apostle which was built at the time. He is the patron saint of doctors, surgeons, the ill, artists, goldsmiths, painters on glass, sculptors, embroiderers, bookbinders, notaries and butchers. He is the protector of sacred art and animals and against bad weather.
