John (27.12) He was the son of Zebediah and the younger brother of James; before becoming Jesus’ favourite disciple together with Simon Peter, he was a disciple of John the Baptist. Jesus wanted him by his side during his Passion in the Garden of Jethsemani, Jesus also placed his mother in John’s care when he was on the cross. After the death of Jesus, John became one of the leading figures in the christian community of Jerusalem and Samaria and most probably also preached later in Efesus. He wrote the Apovalypse while a prisoner on the island of Patmo during Domizian’s reign. When he returned to Efesus he wrote the IV Gospel and the Letters. He died an old man in Efesus in the year 100 or 101. We know for sure that his cult was observed in Efesus at his grave in the church which bears his name. Pope Hadrian, during his papacy (772-795) inaugurated the church dedicated to St. John opposite the Porta Latina. The new exegesis now considers the three different figures of John, the favourite disciple of Jesus, the apostle, the evangelist, to be three distinct characters. John is the patron saint of sculptors, painters, printers, bookbinders, writers, scribes, employees, notaries, theologists, engravers, glass and mirror manufacturers, butchers, basket makers, vintners, candle and saddle makers; he is the protector of friendship and is invoked in case of burns and for a good harvest.
