ST. BARBARA (4.12.) Barbara is one of the 14 auxiliatory saints. According to the legend her father had her closed in a tower because of her unshakeable faith in Christianity, but even here she managed, through the Eucharist, to miraculously strengthen her convictions. Her father, aware of her resolute firmness, handed her to the judges who, after having her horribly tortured, condemned her to death. Tradition dates her martyrdom at the time of the persecutions during the reign of the Emperor Massimino Daja. Barbara was venerated as virgin martyr in Nicomedia. She is the patron saint of miners, prisoners, bricklayers, bell-ringers, bell makers, she protects from sudden death especially thunder and bullets. She is invoked on the point of death.
